Children with cleft lip can be given appliances which will improve the bone and nose structure before surgery. This greatly improves the results of surgery. This treatment is called nasoalveolar moulding or NAM and is best started soon after birth. Within few months after birth bones harden and do not respond well to NAM. In best situations the child should start NAM soon after birth and finish treatment before six months of age.
